Thenjiwe Niki Nkosi
The Paintings
The paintings and multimedia installations of Thenjiwe Niki Nkosi offer a meticulous interplay of line and color as they delve into the dynamics of identity, race, patriarchy, and power. Born to activist parents, including a father who endured a thirty-year exile as a South African freedom fighter, Nkosi spent her formative years between the Zimbabwean capital of Harare and the South African city of Johannesburg, where she currently lives and works. Nkosi is the recipient of the Helgaard Steyn Prize in Painting (2023); the Tollman Award for the Visual Arts (2019) and Philippe Wamba Prize in African Studies (2004). In “Me and Apple,” the character Apple’s paintings are Nkosi’s, and the rat’s art is created by her daughter, Lumuka.
